Recognizing Hard Work and Determination

Each week during the season, each of our coaches will nominate a Player of the Week in recognition of an outstanding performance, superior effort, improvement during practice, leadership or sportsmanship during the week prior. RAYSL will randomly draw from the nominations and announce two winners, one young lady and one young man, on Tuesday or Wednesday following our Sunday travel games.

RAYSL is proud to partner with Vinny's Restaurant & Pizzeria to sponsor our Player of the Week. Vinny's has a long history of supporting local youth sports through charity and sponsorships and the Vinny's Player of the Week is a continuation of the Riccio family's dedication to the Riverside and Ellwood communities.  Our Fall 2016 nominees and winners are:

Week 1, 9/11

  Keri Lechner

Keri's 4 goals led the way in the U15 Girls' 7-1 win over Butler. The goals were just a small part of her overall contribution to the team - her ability to quickly move the ball kept the Butler back four under pressure for 70 minutes and providing a consistent attack for Riverside's front 6.
Week 2, 9/18

  Braden Hinzman

Playing in an attacking midfield role for the first time ever, Braden's smart play created transition opportunities. He tallied three assists in the U12 Boys' 6-1 win over Knoch. His support all over the field was evident as he first assisted from the left side on a cross, then from the middle on a through ball to the striker and then from the right on a diagonal through ball.

Week 3, 9/25

  Gabriella Finch

Gi played all 60 minutes, including 30 in the second half a man down due to injuries, in the U12 Girls 3-2 loss to Hopewell at Brush Creek Park. She then rushed to Neshannock and immediately subbed on in the fourth minute for the U12 Boys - Team Zona. Gi went on to play 57 minutes at left back in the U12 Boys 2-0 win over LC United. For two consecutive games she combined fearless physical play with brilliant positional play and a cool, calm demeanor on the ball which allowed her to generate multiple counterattacks for the midfielders in front of her. Gi was an ironwoman on Sunday and certainly earned this week's Player of the Week honors.

 Week 4, 10/2

  Roslyn Steinbach

Roslyn's play at right back for the U10 Girls on Sunday made a difference all over the field. She read play beautifully and it allowed her to step in and push for offense when the team really needed her. Her ability to play through balls both right and left-footed and free up the midfielders with passes to open space drove multiple scoring chances - even leading to a few of her own shots on frame. She dropped into cover when her partner played pressure and kept the defensive half clean. Roslyn's ability to constantly communicate with her teammates made everyone around her better en route to a 3-2 victory.

 Week 5, 10/9

  Hunter Salter

Hunter played his heart out as the keeper in two losses. Asked to fill in for the U12 Boys as Goalkeeper, he held strong, making multiple stops even though the opponents held his defense under pressure for three-quarters of the game. In the end, he surrendered just two goals and made more than 10 saves to keep his team in it. He quickly changed fields, stepping in the box for the U10 Boys and found himself under similar pressure. He turned in a similar performance, giving up just 4 goals despite facing 15 shots. Hunter is a deserved winner for standing tall against 25 shots and never giving up.
